Passive Voice


Remember this:

a) BE + Past Participle

b) Firstly, identify the verb tense

c) Build the sentence in the passive, writing the auxiliary verb to be in the tense of the active sentence.

Examples:
                         Active Voice                                                Passive Voice

Pres. Simple: Maria drinks the chocolate milk.
Pres. Contin.: Maria is drinking milk.
Simple Past: Maria drank milk.
Past Conti.: Maria was drinking milk.
Future “will”: Maria will drink chocolate milk.
Future “Be going to”: Maria isn’t going to drink chocolate milk.
Modal verb: Should Maria drink chocolate milk?

The chocolate milk is drunk by Maria.
The chocolate milk is being drunk by Maria.
The chocolate milk was drunk by Maria.
The chocolate milk was being drunk by Maria.
The chocolate milk will be drunk by Maria.
The chocolate milk isn’t going to be drunk by Maria.

Should the chocolate milk be drunk by Maria?

 Why do  we use the passive voice?

-Don’t know the agent’s identity
-Not important to mention the agent of the action
-Want to avoid the agent of the action. (journalism)
-Focus on the action
